New England Receives Honors at USATF Annual Meeting

USATF-NE had a full delegation of 16 to reprsent the association at the USATF Annual Meeting in Columbus, Ohio, November 29-December 3.  At the opening workshop, USATF-New England was announced as ranked fourth of the 57 country's associations based on past year accreditation standards and programs.
 
Five New Englanders were named Masters Road Runners of the Year by the USATF Masters LDR Committee. 
Nat Larson (Greater Springfield Harriers, Amherst MA) received a rare honor, as he was named both the M50-54 and M55-59 Road Runner of the Year in the same year. John Barbour (Greater Lowell Road Runners, West Roxbury MA) was recognized as top M60-64 runner, teammate Bill Dixon (Brattleboro VT) led the M70-74 division, Jen Rhines (B.A.A., Boston MA) and Jan Holmquist (Whiriaway Racing Team, Burlington MA) both repeated as W40-44 and W70-74 honoree, respectively.  Our northern neighbor, Joan Samuelson of Maine, was the W60 ROY.
 
Moving off-road, Larson and Barbour shared the Masters Cross Country Runner of the Year award; each won National age group championships and backed their wins with other solid races.
 
USATF-NE Managing Director Steve Vaitones was honored with the Associations Committee Horace Crow Award for long term leadership and service at the association, regional, and national levels. 

Maine's Don Berry received the Officials' Committee James Grey Award for leadership and development, and Connecticut's Bill Mongovan, Region 1 Junior Olympic Coordinator, accepted the Youth Committee's Frank Sevigne Award for career services to Youth athletics

The Boston University coaching staff was recognized as Meet Director of the Year for their many years of hosting high level indoor events.
 
Two National Championships were awarded to local races.
The Loon Mountain Run (Lincoln NH) will host the 2018 USATF Mountain Running Championship July 8, and a month later, the Ragged 50K (Danbury NH) will host the 2018 USATF Trail Ultra Championship on August 12.
