American 5 km record for Ben True

Ben True (West Lebanon NH / Saucony) set his second US record at the 5 km distance in winning his fourth B.A.A. 5K in Boston's Back Bay on Saturday.

The traditionally fast and competitive appetizer to the Boston Marathon did not disappoint, as True outkicked Stephen Sambu (Kenya) down the home stretch on Charles Street to clock 13:20 for the American and course record, 2 seconds ahead of his rival - and 2 seconds better than his previous US standard on the same course in 2015.

In the women's results, Buze Diriba (Ethiopia) edged Molly Huddle (Providence/Saucony) by the same margin of victory as the men's race; Huddle was just 6 seconds off her own US best set here in 2015.

The 5K was a prelude to a day of activity, with the B.A.A. Mile featuring six middle school (kilometer), high school (mile), and professional races, and the Club 121 Youth Relays providing more street action for the weekend's large downtown crowds.
