Carmel Fitzgibbon is November Athlete of the Month

IMG_8426.jpgCarmel Fitzgibbon of Waltham Track Club is USA Track & Field (USATF) New England’s Athlete of the Month for November 2017. Fitzgibbon started November by winning the Grade 8 race at the Massachusetts Middle School Cross Country Invitational with the day's fastest time for girls. She continued dominating the cross country scene the next weekend, winning the age 13-14 division race at the USATF New England Junior Olympic Cross Country Championship in Smithfield, Rhode Island. She then led her team to a National qualifying position the following Sunday in winning the USATF Region 1 Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships, also on the Smithfield course.

“When I was nine, my team qualified for the National Championship, and I got to compete with four of those teammates again this year. Our main goal was to qualify as a team, so we could all go to Nationals,” explained Fitzgibbon.

Her victory at the Region 1 Junior Olympic Cross Country Championship helped Waltham Track Club place third, securing them a spot at the USATF Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships on December 9.

“I did not have much of a game plan going into the race. There is so much talent in this sport, that I really just wanted to go out and qualify as a team. I wanted to set a pace that would leave me with a little left at the end to cover any moves made by any challengers at the end of the race. It was really windy at the Region 1 meet, and I was really happy to set a personal best,” said Fitzgibbon.

Off the track, Fitzgibbon is a volunteer trainer for Guiding Eyes for the Blind. “We take 8 month old puppies and train them to be guide dogs until they are about 16 months. I recently started this, but I am really enjoying it,” said Fitzgibbon.
