Cox wins national Junior Olympic title in Alabama


Aidan Cox (NH Thunder) won the boys age 11-12 3K race at the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships in Hoover, Alabama. Though held in the deep south, temperatures at race time were below freezing.

Cox, winner of the New England and Region I meets, took the lead near halfway and finished in 10:37 with an impressive 10 second gap over the runner-up. There were 401 finishers in his race.

Other local individuals with top 10 finishes included Torin Kindopp (9th, 11-12, Elm City), Gavin Schaaf (10th, 11-12, Green Mt.AA), and Celia Jessiman (6th, 15-18, Waltham TC). Noteworthy, too, was Sean Kay (North Shore Striders) taking 12th place in the boys 13-14 race, the day's largest with 429 finishers.

Local clubs scored in every division. with four top-5 finishes. Green Mountain AA placed fourth of 33 teams in the boys 11-12 division, Nashua PAL Striders was fourth in the girls 9-10, and Granite State Flash earned two fifths - girls 11-12 and 13-14.
