David Angell of Virginia Repeats Win at USATF 10 km Masters National Championship

NsgOLpOTSSSDC4c2Tkp7yA-(1).jpgDavid Angell (Roanoke Valley Elite/Virginia association) and  Jennifer Bayliss (San Ramon CA/Pacific association) took home the gold at the 2018 USATF Masters 10 km National Championship on Sunday, April 29 at the James Joyce Ramble.

A repeat winner, Angell ran a race to similar to 2017, pulling away from the lead pack of David Bedoya of the B.A.A. and Derrick Jones of Central Mass Striders before the third mile and never looked back. 

His finishing time of 32:32 was five seconds better than 2017, but his gap on second place - Patrick Rich of Central Mass Striders - was almost the same thirty seconds of the previous year.

Bayliss took a commanding even earlier in the race, and her 37:19 winning time was 43 seconds ahead fo the B.A.A.'s Karolyn Bowley (38:02).

OOc3gURPRbS9dW8grPSdRw.jpgA pair of 2017 USATF Runners of the Year led the age graded results.  Nat Larson (Greater Springfield Harriers) at 55 years old placed first with an age graded percentage of 93.90%, ahead of Gene Dykes (Gr.Philadelphia TC/Mid-Atlantic association) at 92.53% and Bill Dixon (Gr.Lowell RoadRunners) at 91.01%. 

IMG_1942-(1).JPGJan Holmquist (Whirlaway Racing Team) at age 73 had the best women's age graded score with a 93.37%, ahead of Marisa Sutera Strange (Athena TC/Mid-Atlantic associaiton, 92.50%) and Whirlaway teammate Karen Durante (92.10%).

Two US Age Group records were set on the ideal-for-runnng day.  Gene Dykes scored an age 70-74 US 10 km record in 39:04, but had competition as Bill Dixon's 39:41 also shattered the previous record of 40:15 set in 2015. 
And though near the back of the overall results, Anne Stockman (Rensselaer NY/Adirondack association) set a new US W85+ record with her 1:24:58.

New England runners winning age divisions were Durante (W65), Holmquist (W70), Kent Lemme (M50, Gr.Springfield Harriers), Larson (M55), Charlie Muse (M60, Cambridge RC), and Bill Riley (M80, NE 65+ RC).  Central Mass Striders M40+, Greater Springfield Harriers M50+, and New England 65+ RC M80+ earned team victories.
