John Barbour is the October Athlete of the Month

After a stellar performance in the 2017 USATF Masters 5 km Cross Country Championships at Franklin Park in Boston, MA, John Barbour has been named the USATF New England 2017 October Athlete of the Month.

"I was a bit more nervous than I was even willing to admit to myself," explained Barbour, "I had been at a high school cross country meet for five hours the day before, so I was feeling a little tired on race morning. Once the race started, I just tried to relax and let things unfold."

Barbour won the Men's age 60+ race by over 47 seconds, crossing the finish line at 18:30. Second place was Ken Youngers of Atlanta Track Club in 19:17. Barbour's time was the third best overall age graded score of the day.

"I never thought the race was 'in the bag'.  So many things can happen, so I wanted to keep running hard. Halfway down the final straight, I noticed the finish banner and told myself I needed to enjoy this. Runners my age don't break finish banners often, and I'm sure that was the last time I will," explained Barbour.

While Barbour thinks it may be the last time he breaks a finish banner, we're hoping he does it again at the USATF Club Nationals in Lexington, Kentucky where his Greater Lowell Road Runners club will be competing.

Other than running, Barbour loves coaching, reading, and traditional folk music, saying "I was playing around with a long-neck banjo a bit last night when I found out I had won Athlete of the Month."
