Pagano and Balouris qualify for World XC team

Teammates Sarah Pagano and Elaina Balouris of the Boston Athletic Association qualified for the IAAF World Cross Country Championships with their their 5th and 6th place finishes at the 2017 USATF Winter Cross Country Championships in Bend, Oregon on Saturday. 
The top six finishers were automatic selections for Team USA, which will compete on March 26 in Kampala, Uganda. Pagano was runner-up at the 2016 USATF Fall Nationals, and Balouris earned her second World XC roster, having represented the USA in China in 2015.
The women's race length increased to 10 km (from 8 km) to match the new distance to be run at the IAAF Worlds. Also running well were Liz Costello (New Balance Boston) in 8th and Katrina Spratford (NE Distance) in 13th. Both have a chance to be selected as alternates for the Worlds or for the North American /Central American/Caribbean Championships later in the month.

The top New England male finisher was 2016 USATF-NE champion Jim Spisak (Saucony/NE Distance), placing 17th.
