Sam Ellison is February Athlete of the Month

Ellison started February by running a 1:00.92 500 meters at the B.U. Scarlet & White Meet, then a 1:46.49 800 meters at the B.U. Valentine Meet. He later qualified for the finals in the 800 meters at the USATF Indoor Track & Field Championships, placing fourth overall in 1:47.29.

“I had not been to the U.S. Championships for indoor or outdoor since the summer of 2014 due to inopportune injuries and failing to perform when it counted. I had a really strong indoor season leading into Nationals, and I knew I was ready to run and attempt to make the World Championship team. While I didn’t make the top two in the final, it was a big confidence boost to come back after a long hiatus, make the final, and place fourth,” explained Ellison.

While Ellison competes mainly in the 800 meters indoors, his favorite event indoors is the 500 meters. It’s the closest he gets to competing with 400 meter runners.

Next up for Ellison is the 800 meters at the Adidas Boost Games in Boston, and is looking to run fast times at the Adrian Martinez Meet in early June.

Off the track, Ellison enjoys writing and hopes to pursue a career in journalism. “I enjoy writing about underrepresented and marginalized identities. I’ve had a few things published, but I am also passionate about creating and fostering inclusive environments, so I do a lot of fostering inclusive environments. Otherwise, I love to read, cook (and eat), and spend time with family and friends,” explains Ellison.
