March 31, Upton MA
IMG_2583.JPGRuben Sanca and Rachel Schilkowsky were first to the finish at the Frank Nealon Boston Tune Up 15km in Upton MA on Saturday.  A race record 658 finishers enjoyed testing the course of the first time championship after a snow and slush storm cancelled the 2016 event.  Ten age group course records were set on a sunny day with a bit of a breeze.
Sanca (Whirlaway Racing Team) made his round trip from Nipmuc High School in 47:29, the third fastest winning time in race history and a course record. (Bill Rodgers set the race record 46:08 on a different and uncertified course in 1986).   Dan Vassallo (CMS), a place and barely a tick behind Sanca at the New Bedford Half Marathon,  was 23 seconds back in second. Third placer Bronson Venable led Western Mass Distance Project to the team title, as the top three clubs of five scorers finished within 50 seconds.
Schilkowsky (NEDistance/rabbit) moved up one place from her New Bedford placing to take the gold soup ladle by almost two minutes over Kasie Enman (GMAA). Clocking 53:48, she was just six seconds off her own course record run in 2016.  The women of Whirlaway scored a triple crown, winning the open, 40+, and 50+ divisions.
Top 40+ runners were David Bedoya (BAA) and  Christin Doneski (Whirlaway), with the best age graded marks coming from Nat Larson (age 55, Gr.Springfield, 92.19) and Karen Durante (67, Whirlaway, 90.85).
