Serafini, Moraczewski score strong wins at Half Marathon Championships

Louis Serafini and Katie Moraczewski took the individual wins at the USATF New England Half Marathon Championships, the second race of the 2017 USATF-NE Grand Prix, on Sunday. The championships were held as part of the New Bedford Half Marathon.

Forecasted snow didn't materialize, but temps in the 30's and winds that gusting over 40 mph which stood runners up in miles 8-10 out to Fort Taber made finishing times all the more impressive.

After passing on the Amherst 10 Miler, Serafini (The Heartbreakers) broke from two time winner Ruben Sanca (Whirlaway) amd Amos Sang (WMDP) after 10 miles to split the tape in 1:06:20 with a margin of 34 seconds. He'd previously placed fifth and third the past two years. Moraczewski, representing the B.A.A. for in a GP race for the first time, was never challenged for the women's win in 1:18:02, with teammate Emma Spencer second and 10 Mile champ Danielle Bessette (Battle Road) third.

The Boston Athletic Association swept the open team titles in the Whaling City, placing five men in the top ten, and womeon placing 1-2-6. The gold and blue also took the M40 team prize, and CMS women were W40 champions.
