Spisak, Rees Roll to Wins in New Bedford

March 18, New Bedford MA

Jim Spisak and Holly Rees led a field of over 2000 competitors at the 41st New Bedford Half Marathon hosted by the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick on Sunday.  Sub-freezing temperatures were given an additional edge by winds that increased over the duration of the race, making the waterfront sections particularly challenging at the first event of the 2018 USATF-NE Road Race Grand Prix.

Spisak (unattached, Providence RI) had broken from his competition before 5 miles, and hit the 10km mark in 30:24.  He looked fresh in breaking the tape in 1:04:51, the fastest winning time since 2009 and over two minutes ahead of second placer Matthew Herzig (The Heartbreakers).   Tracksmith Hare won their first USATF-NE team crown.

In a similarly dominating performance, Rees (Battle Rd TC) split 10 km in 34:34 and recorded 1:14:06 for the result topper, a personal best by over 4 minutes.  Rachel Schilkowski (NE Distance) was first among the pursuers in 1:15:52, and The Heartbreakers took club honors.

David Bedoya (B.A.A.) and Karolyn Bowley (Middletown RI) topped the age 40+ finishers, with the B.A.A. and Whirlaway RT taking the men's and women's 40+ team titles. respectively.

Final individual, age-graded, and team scoring will be posted mid-week.  Age group and age graded results can be found at the LDR Page
