XC Grand Prix Kicks off at GBTC Festival

September 9th, 2018 Elm Bank Park, Wellesley MA On a early fall day, athletes from around New England made their way to Elm Bank Park to lace up their spikes and engage in the first XC race of the 2018 USATF-New England Cross Country Grand Prix. Hosted by the Greater Boston Track Club, the festival featured a Youth 2k and Men and Woman Open/Master’s 5ks. The course consisted of a large loop along the Charles River, and a smaller loop in the wooded area surrounding the horticultural fields At approximately 9:30 in the morning, the Masters and Open Women toed the line and awaited the instructions of race director, Shaun Dever. After some race instructions and commands, the women took off. From the start, Greater Boston Track Club’s Aleta Looker set a fast pace, only rivaled by Michelle Vaccaro of Harvard’s Running Club. 18:22 seconds later, Aleta crossed the finish line for the win, with Vaccaro crossing in an 18:33. On the women’s master’s side, Kara Haas of the Greater Lowell Road Runners won in a 19:42, 54 seconds in front of second place Ashley Kraus of Western Mass Distance project. In the last race, the open and master’s mens race was won by Steve Curley of HFC Striders. The open men’s team title goes to GBTC, who put five runners in the top 10 team scoring positions, winning with 28 points. Also present at the race were Harvard’s NIRCA club team, who participated in the open men and women’s race. USATF-New England has entered a partnership with NIRCA and looks forward to future races.
