Fast racing for all ages in Mayor's Cup

31st event runs at Franklin Park

Runners of all ages took advantage of an ideal running day and excellent course conditions at the 31st Boston Mayor's Cup cross country races at Franklin Park.

The day opened with six youth races for boys and girls age 6 to 14 and included some event age division records on the 1.1 mile circuit. The 484 finishers was the largest total in the meet's history.  Four clubs earned first place team medals - Cheetahs TC, CLCF Panthers, New England Elite, and Waltham TC.

As with many open events on the crowded fall New England running schedule, participation was down from recent years but the level of competition remained high. Both championship race winners were successful in their first competition over the historic course. Women's 5km winner Annie Rodenfels, a multi-time NCAA Division 3 champion now representing the B.A.A., ran away from the field in a time of 16:39, not far off the meet and course record.
Men's 8km victor Dan Curts, a former New England high school 3000 meter record holder, waited until the final 300 meters for his decisive move to take the win in 24:03. Club winners were Rhode Island TC (Women) and Western Mass Distance Project (men).
