54th Codfish Bowl XC draws crowds

54th edition of the classic race at Franklin Park

The 54th Codfish Bowl saw one of the largest fields in event history on an ideal running day at Franklin Park on Saturday. Competitors made up mostly of teams from college running clubs in the National Intercollegiate Running Club Association (NIRCA) along with several varsity squads and open club competitors provided 153 women's finishers and 186 men.
Emma Wawrzynek, a grad student with MIT Running Club, outlegged Haley Abing of The Heartbreakers by 4 seconds to win the women's run in 19:15;  Boston College Running Club took team honors over Northeastern RC 49-69.  Men's victor Cameron Leonard from Northeastern crossed the mats in 25:10, a 37 seconds ahead of Max Girardet of Naval Prep. The NU team recorded a convincing win with 19 points with U.Conn runner-up at 96.

Following the adult races, the meet hosted two youth developmental races for Boston Running Coalition clubs. .

The Codfish Bowl was founded by the late Bill Squires while he was coaching at Boston State College (now UMass Boston) and was the first local cross country meet which welcomed both club and college runners - meets were college or open only up til then.
