USATF-NE Junior Olympic Championships run in Rhode Island

Teams and individuals qualify in the Ocean State for spots in Region 1 meet

A raw day with frequent showers did not deter enthusiasm at the USATF-NE Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships held in Smithfield RI on Sunday, November 13.  700 runners braved the first rainy day for the meet in many years.  Hosted by Sentinel Striders, the club worked with the town over the past year to refurbish the trails on the Bruce Ewart course at Deerfield Park.

As one coach noted, it's often tougher to qualify out of the USATF-NE championship to the Region 1 meet than it is to go from Regionals to Nationals.  Team titles were won by five clubs in the age 8-and-under to age 15-18 divisions - Cheetahs Track Club, Nashual PAL, New England Elite, Sentinel Striders, and Waltham Track Club; fifteen different clubs fielded at least one scoring team during the day.

The top 5 teams and indivdiuals finishing in the top 30 overall in each races qualifified for the Region 1 meet in Maine on November 20.  The same numbers will advance participants from regionals to the December 10 National meet in Texas.
