On the road again - Serafini, Hasz win at 5km championship
2023 opening association road race championship draws 700 USATF New England members
The 2023 Road Race Chamionship season kicked off with fast times at the Super Sunday 5K in Cambridge MA on February 12. Led by
Louis Serafini
(Tracksmith) and
Bethany Hasz
(B.A.A.), nearly 700 USATF-New England members were among the 1145 finishers who covered the pancake-flat certified 5km loop. The two open winners earned their titles in different race scenarios on a windless day with temperatures in the 40s.
Around the final turn at the race's 3 mile mark, six men were in contention for the title, but Serafini had the strongest kick and clocked 14:20 at the finish. The next four across the line were within 3 seconds as 23 men bettered 15:00.
Hasz, winner of the 2022 USATF National cross country championship in December, turned in a solo performance of 15:45, 22 seconds ahead of Anna Oeser (Battle Road TC).
Leading the masters divisions were
Prescott Leach
(Cambridge Sports Union, M40, 19th overall, 14:54) and
Jennifer Lutz
(Battle Road TC, W40, 13th overall, 17:40)
Both men's and women's open division scored 19 clubs. The
B.A.A. men
placed their 5 scorers among the top 8 to convincingly take the team title over Tracksmith, while the
Battle Road TC women
earned their trophy by a minute over the B.A.A.,
