Elle St. Pierre - World Champion!
Vermont's finest, New Balance Boston's best, wins World Athletics Indoor 3000 meters
Setting an American record in the process, Vermont native
Elle (Purrier) St.Pierre
won the 3000 meters at the
World Athletics Indoor Championships
in Glasgow, Scotland, on Mach 2. The record and gold medal came almost a year to the day after giving birth to her son.
St. Pierre, who competes for New Balance Boston, came from behind on the gun lap to clock 8:20.87, breaking a 30 year old championship record. The
silver medalist in the event 2 years ago, she passed World outdoor 5000 meter record holder Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia on the final straightaway to become the first American woman to take gold in the event at the World Indoors.
A University of New Hampshire alum, St.Pierre was ready for the performance, having come within 2/10 of the US record in February while finishing second in the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix event in Boston, and reestablishing the American Record in the mile a week later at the Millrose Games, running 4:16.41.
