New England Athletes Compete at USA National Indoor Championships


USATF New England association athletes had a strong presence and strong performances at the Toyota USATF Indoor Track and Field Championships held at the Ocean Breeze facility on Staten Island, NY February 22-24.

Sam Ellison (Dorchester MA / B.A.A.) ran to a silver medal in the 600 meters.  After qualifying for the final with the second fastest time in the trials, Ellison ran a personal best of 1:15:20, sixth fastest US time ever; winner Donovan Brazier clocked a World Best 1:13.77. 

Gabby Thomas (Boston/New Balance) also earned a silver in her first National Championship.  The new pro, still a senior at Harvard, placed in the 300 meters in 35.98. 

A pair of New Balance runners finished their event as bronze medalists. Elinor Purrier  (Montgomery Ctr VT) helped push the pace in the 2 mile and recorded 9:34.65 on Sunday after a sixth in the mile the night before.  In that mile, Cory McGee (Brighton MA) took third wtih her 4:30.14 time.

Overall, New Englanders had 10 top-8 finishes.
