New England delegation represents at USATF Annual Meeting
December 9, 2020
The New England association was well represented at the USATF National Annual Meeting held over five days last week in Reno, Nevada. Fifteen delegates represented the association in sports and adminstrative committees, giving a voice in championship selection, legislation changes, and rules changes. Several were in a day early to attend the Associations and Youth Committee workshops.
In addition to committee work, honors were announced for a dozen members for athletic and service performances. Four USATF-New England runners earned Masters Runner of the Year for 2019 in their five year age division; those honorees were, in age group order, M55-59 - Nat Larson (Gr.Springfield Harriers/Amherst MA), M65-69 John Barbour (Gr.Lowell Road Runners/West Roxbury MA), W75-79 Jan Holmquist (Whirlaway Racing Team / Burlington MA) and M80-84 Harry Carter (B.A.A./Blackstone MA). (Maine neighbor Joan Samuelson repeated as W60-64 runner of the year).
Larson earned a second award for off-road performance as the Masters Cross Country "Harrier of the Year", and Kasie Enman (Green Mountain AA/Huntington VT) was tabbed Masters Mountain Runner of the Year from her results in US and World championship races.
Pat Lavelle (Western Mass TF Officials Associaton/Holyoke MA) was presented with the Officials Committee "Horace Crow" award for outstanding service as a field event official.
Five USATF-NE officials will be working at the 2020 US Olympic Track & Field Trials meet. Those selected for the event, scheduled for Eugene, Oregon, in June are Nicole Bullock (Swansea MA, hammer), Bob Gidari (Goffstown NH, discus), Justin Kuo (Brookline MA, technical management), Tom Meagher (Duxbury MA, starting), and Pat Lavelle (shot put).
Additionally, three others will work at other major USA events; Pat Ronan (West Newbury, MA) will serve as head pole vault official at the USA Indoor Championships in February, and both Joe Bullock (Swansea MA, throws) and Dennis Vienneau (Freedom NH, throws) will be on the field at the US Junior/U20 Championship in June.
