Elle Purrier sets US indoor mile record Millrose Games
Elle Purrier
(New Balance Boston) broke Mary Slaney's 38 year old American record in the mile at the 113th NYRR Millrose Games in New York on Saturday. She was one of three US record setters in the meet.
Making a move on the backstretch, the Vermont native and U.New Hampshire alum moved into second as she split a personal best 4:00.20 at 1500 and passed defending champion Konstanze Klosterhalfen in the final straightaway to win in 4:16.85, the second fastest ever women's indoor mile. The field produced four national records as the top 8 were clocked under 4:29.0.
Both men's and women's American 800 meter records were reset at the meet. Donavan Brazier (Nike), winner of the 600 at the recent New Balance Indoor Grand Prix meet in Boston, lowered the men's record to 1:44.22, fifth fastest ever run indoors. His 400 splits were 53.04 and 51.18 over the 200 meter oval. Ajee' Wilson (adidas) ran 1:58.29 for the four laps, bettering the old mark by .31 seconds, which Wilson established at last year's Millrose Games.
New England athletes also ranked well in the non-professional events.
Julian Oakley
(Ocean Stat AC New Balance/Providence) won the Allen Steinfeld Mile in 3:58.86 with James Randon (Saucony Freedom) a place back in 4:00.18. Jordan Mann (Ocean State AC New Balance) recorded a personal best 7:50.90 in the 3000 meters in 7th and Erika Kemp (B.A.A.) also had a PB in the 3000, 8:53.06 for 5th.
