New England Junior Olympics sees record performances
The
2023 USATF New England Junior Olympic Track & Field Championship
meet returned to Fitchburg State University's newly resurfaced track for a successful day of action on Saturday. Early overcast skies, light rain, and a 20 minute torrential downpour which delayed some events was followed by 4 hours of blue skies, and over 800 athletes recorded more than 2000 individual performances during the meet. The entry list was the meet's second largest ever.
After a quiet several years for record updates, Fitchburg became "Speed City" for the day. Twenty three meet results broke or tied championship record, led by the
Cambridge Jets
boys age 17-18 relay teams. The winners of the 4 x 100 (41.77) and 4 x 400 (3:21.44) lowerd the division standards in both events, the previous 4 x 100 time dating to 2004. The
Provicence Cobras
boys 9-10 4 x 100 team ran 1:03.31, erasing a 20 year old mark.
Individually, Providence Cobras sprinter
Lisa Raye
was a record setter in each of her gold medal events in the age 15-16 division. The high school freshman broke both 100 meter (11.89) and 200 meter (24.15) records and contributed a leg on the Cobras' 4 x 100 record squad which clocked 49.73.
Catherine Jacobs
(Launch) set new 8-and-under meet bests in the shot and mini-jav. Other throws and jumps records also went by the wayside. The full record board follows below.
Full Results
The top 8 finishers in each event in each age group qualify for the Region 1 championship July 7-9 hosted by the Adirondack assocition at Taconic Hills High School in Craryville, New York.
