New England successes at Pan Am U20 Championship
Shea breaks 34 year old meet record
Ellie Shea
(Emerging Elites/Belmont MA) and
Sophia Gorarrian
(RI TC/Providence RI) earned individual gold medals at the
Pan American U20 Championships
held August 4-6 in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. (U20 - not turning age 20 during the year.) Two individuals per nation were eligible to compete, with Team USA selected from the National US U20 championship in July.
Shea was the meet's only double winner in individual events, taking 1500m honors on Friday afternoon and returning in Sunday opening event to win the 3000m. Leading from the gun in the latter, her margin of victory was 45 seconds at the finish and her time of 9:05.78 broke the 34 year old championship meet record.
A freshman-to-be at Harvard, Gorarrian impressed in her first international competition with a win in the 800, holding the lead from the 400m split onward. The Rhode Islander was also voted co-captain of the US team.
A pair of Boston College freshmen medaled as well;
Sydney Segalla
earned a gold with a leg on the winning USA women's 4x400m and
Damon Frabotta
brought back bronze from the 400 hurdles race. Rounding out New England participation,
Marcus Reilly
(Edge Elite / Northbridge MA) placed fifth (top US) in the 1500m.
