Fast field at Bobby Doyle 5 Mile Championship
Jan Holmquist breaks another US W80 record
A warm and uncharacteristicly low humidity day led to quality performances as the USATF New England 5 Mile Championship returned to the Bobby Doyle 5 Mile in Narragansett RI on Sunday. 863 finished the scenic coastal loop course up from last year's participation..
At the front of the race, the field broke to a trio of contenders by the 5km split.
Mohamed El Aaraby
(Greater Lowell RR) made the first move in the next mile and went on umpressed to break the tape in 23:04, followed by
Barry Keane
(B.A.A., 23:14) and
Ben Drezek
(Tracksmith, 23:15). The top three all broke the previous course record of 23:26. The B.A.A., with five scorers in the top 10 overall, secured the team championship.
The women's competition was dominated by
Anna Oeser
(Battle Road TC) who led at the reported split each mile, finishing in 27:25, 30 seconds up on
Caroline McClelland
. Oeser's performance led her club to the open team win ahead of Notch Brewing Runners.
Jan Holmquist
(Whirlaway RT) bettered her third USA W80 age divison record in the last three USATF-NE Championships, her time of 40:16 improved the existing division record by over 2 minutes.

The 2024 Grand Prix series concludes at the popular Lone Gull 10km in Gloucester MA on September 22. The Cape Cod Marathon is a stand-alone championship this year on October 14 with significant USATF-NE Team Prize Money.
