Junior Olympic Cross Country draws over 800 to Rhode Island
11/17/2019
797 youth crossed the finish line in 10 races at the USATF New England Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships held on Sunday at Deerfield Park in Smithfield RI. Though temperatures were only in the high 30s with partial sun and a light breeze, the day was filled with good performances and fun.
Sixteen different clubs fielded scoring teams in at least one race, with division winners including Granite State Flash (B 8/U), Green Mountain AA (B 15-18), Nashua PAL (G 8/U, G 9-10), New England Elite (G 11-12, G 13-14), Riptide Running Cape Cod (B 9-10), Rumford Road Runners (B 11-12), Valhalla TC (G 15-18), and Waltham TC (B 13-14).
Notable individual winners were Marcus Reilly (Edge Elite) and Carmen Luisi (Holliston) in the boys and girls 13-14 division races, scoring their second major meet wins in 8 days after wins at the Massachusetts middle school championship on November 9. The 13-14 divison were the largest and most competitive races of the day; the combined number of finishers in those two races alone were larger than the total runners in three of the other five Region 1 association full meets.
The top 5 teams and placers in the top 30 in each race earned a spot in the Region 1 meet next Sunday, November 24, at Sunken Meadow State Park on Long Island, New York.
