Winds were in runners faces heading out Atlantic Road along the ocean, but a tailwind on the return route led to fast times at the USATF-NE 10km championship held at the Lone Gull 10K in Gloucester MA on Sunday, September 20. Though having a solid lead turning into the Good Harbor Beach parking lot, Chris Collet (RITC) barely held off a fast closing Eric Van Der Els (B.A.A.) 29:24 to 29:25 with both broking the course record; 15 runners finished in 31:00 or better. Justin Freeman (Tracksmith) was top in the over 40 results at 32:26. Women's winner Orla Rocha (Notch RC) clocked 33:55, an even minute over runner-up Julia Fennerty (Whirlaway). Past open winner Molly Huddle (RITC) took third and was masters gold medalist in 35:00. Team honors went to Boston Athletic Association men and Battle Road TC women, with Notch Run Club second in both divisions.
