Mountain/Ultra/Trail - known as "MUT" - covers three areas of mostly off-road running, and race conditions can overlap. Given the nature of MUT courses, except for road or track ultras, many distances off-road cannot be certified for distance are "best estimates" The New England Association hosts Annual Championships in the 3 disciplines of Mountain, Ultra, and Trail. The Mountain Circuit is a well subcribed series where earning Mountain Goat status includes a Mt Washington Road Race lottery bypass and a comemmorative apparel item. Ultra distance is longer than a marathon (26.22 miles), with race distances usually starting at 50km. These may take place on tracks, roads (usually multiple loops), or trails. Trail running is off-road. Terrain may be similar to higher level cross country running or be technical courses with hazardous footing. Trails can be wide and well-worn or single-track and require uninterrupted attention, rock-hard (with rocks) or wet and muddy. Mountain running races may be all-uphill or up-and-down courses, and may be single loop, multiple loop, or pont to point. Slope can be mild or extreme. Footing in mountain races can be pavement, trail, or a combination. USATF New England has among the most active mountain running schedules in the US. With championships and a season long mountain circuit - there are plenty of events for the avid hill runner.
The 2020 USATF-NE Mountain Circuit is officially cancelled after three of the eight series races were cancelled and two of the remaining races were expected to either cancel or significantly scale back due to COVID-19 related safety restrictions. After careful consideration, there will not be enough remaining races for a meaningful series. Races may still occur outside of the series.
